PrepCom to the Review Conference to Consider the Implementation of the Programme of Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons (UNPoA)
New York, USA
March 19-23, 2012

In August the countries of the world will convene at the United Nations to assess progress since 2001 when the UN Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects (UN PoA) took effect. They will also discuss the next ten years, and opportunities for advancing our common cause – to prevent injuries and deaths from gun violence, which still kills hundreds of thousands each year, and maims millions more.

Aiming for Prevention Director Maria Valenti and IPPNW doctors Cathey Falvo from the US and Drs. Hakeem Ayinde and Emeka Okolo from Nigeria joined NGOs from around the world to participate in the UN PoA PrepCom March 19-23 which sets the stage for the Review Conference. Dr. Okolo also served as an NGO representative on the Nigerian delegation. The Chair of the conference is Ambassador U. Joy Ogwu from Nigeria, so being part of this delegation is of great significance!

IPPNW’s enduring mission at the UN PoA events is to raise dialogue on the health and human consequences of armed violence, and call for more involvement of the health community in developing prevention programs and policies.  We made our voices heard in a variety of ways.
