of Nuclear War (JPPNW)

[Posted May 8, 2017]

About the japanese affiliate

JPPNW has approximately 3,000 member physicians who appeal for the abolition of nuclear weapons from a medical /biological perspective. As physicians from the only country to have suffered atomic bombings, JPPNW members are actively involved in various projects and activities such as providing healthcare for the radiation-exposed at home and abroad, educating and training fellow physicians/researchers, and supporting anti-nuclear education. Since the 1st IPPNW World Congress, JPPNW has sent delegates to every world congress. The 9th IPPNW World Congress took place in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1989, and we were honored to host the 20th IPPNW World Congress again in Hiroshima in 2012.

How can locals get involved with the affiliate today?

Local people are invited to major events hosted by JPPNW. 158 citizens participated in the 7th IPPNW North and South Asia Joint Regional Conference in 2009, and 23 citizens attended the JPPNW-sponsored lecture meeting on the outcomes of the 2010 NPT Review Conference. Conversely, JPPNW members contribute to peace activities led by outside parties such as UNITAR (United Nations Institute of Training and Research), Hiroshima City and Nagasaki City. We also give lectures in local universities and participate in activities of the peace NGO network all over Japan including Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
