IPPNW's 17th World Congress took place at the Paasitorni Center in Helsinki, Finland from September 7-10, 2006. The Congress was organized jointly by IPPNW and Physicians for Social Responsibility - Finland (PSR-F).

Under the Congress title of "Mission of Physicians: War or Health?", the three main themes of the workshops and plenary sessions were 1) nuclear abolition and the campaign for a Nuclear Weapons Convention 2) Small Arms and the public health impact of war, and 3) energy security.
